DescriptionCHAPTER FOUR - FOUNDING OF TOWNS, RANCHES AND FORTS FORT CAMERON September, 1873, witnessed the construction of a Military Barracks at Beaver. A post had been established in May when 250 United States Troops arrived in the Territory. Though weary from a two-hundred mile walk, a tented city arose almost over night with a large hospital tent in the center, Doctor Elbery in charge. This hospital was the only one within a radius of 150 miles. While its purpose was for the care of the soldiers, many citizens received medical aid. The Post was situated on the north side of the Beaver River, about one mile from the mouth of the canyon in a recess between foothills of the Wasatch mountains, two miles east of Beaver City, and was about 6, 200 feet above sea level. It was established May 25, 1872, by Companies D, E, G, and L, Eighth U.S. Infantry, commanded by Major John D. Wilkins, Eighth U.S. Infantry; Lieut. Colonel George A. Woodward, Fourth U.S. Infantry; Captain David Krause, Fourteenth U.S. Infantry and Lieut. Colonel Nathan W. Osborne, Sixth U.S. Infantry. A military reservation was declared at the Post by the President of the United States, May 12, 1873, for an area of two and two-thirds square miles, and a wooded timbered reserve was declared November 10, 1879, embracing an area of 21, 338, 640 square miles.
