Our Music Department. Among the important work done during the year 1916-17 will long be remembered the Music Department, under the able direction of Professor Gerrit de Jong, Jr. He successfully imparted some of his enthusiasm to the student of this department, which in turn was felt throughout the school. The Orchestra. -- Much was added to the enjoyment of the students by the presence of the school orchestra at their entertainments, socials, dances, etc., which also furnished so much of the necessary practical experience for the players, while The Band took care of the outdoor work. The Choir was given a chance for interesting work in the season, using Shepherd's Christmas Cantata, "The Word Made Flesh," which was rendered in exceptionally good style before the holidays. It was on this occasion that the newly organized orchestra made its initial appearance. The Quartettes deserve comment for the splendid service they rendered on occasions of all kinds. The Opera. -- Although the performance of Sullivan's famous opera, "The Pirates of Penzance," is at this early date still in the future, we feel assured that it will not only be a notable event so far as the school is concerned, but it will be the most elaborate musical treat this community has ever received.
