Don Bryant took a photograph of his brother Dave standing at the mouth of this Uranium Mine Tunnel located high in the cliffs over looking the Muddy Creek area. The photographer believes it was the radon gas inside the mine that came through blue colored and glistening. Between 1950 and 1956, 50,000 uranium claims were filed in the Emery County Recorder's office. Men flocked here in old jalopies and army jeeps, equipped with Geiger counters, picks and sledgehammers. Very few made millions. Others traded jalopies for Buicks and Lincolns, and some lost everything they had. There are over 150 adits (horizontal mine openings) on the San Rafael Swell. Uranium mine openings are now being closed by the BLM and DOGM.
