When the Spotted Wolf route for the Interste 70 was chosen, there was a great deal of blasting and cutting to make a way for a road through the imposing rock border on the east side of the San Rafael Swell. It was completed and opened to the public in 1970. It is probably the most scenic piece of the nation's freeway system and also the longest stretch without any services. There are several scenic pull-out viewpoints along the way. This highway opened up the San Rafael Swell to the world. Before the interstate, the Swell was mostly just Castle Valley's back yard.
