Probably the most famous stories regarding the Swaseys and their horses was a time when Charlie wagered a herd of cattle with his brother Sid, that Sid's horse "Socks" could not jump a deep, narrow gorge called the Black Box. The walls of rock are vertical with the San Rafael River running about 55 or 60 feet below. The distance of the narrowest span from one rock wall to the other is about 14 feet. Charlie bet Sid his herd of cows that he wouldn't jump the canyon. The Swaseys were never ones to refuse a good bet, so Sid made the jump and Charlie gave up his herd (until the next bet was made between one another). It should be noted that Sid did not jump back across, but made the long journey around. Later sheep men put a wagon bed across that point for their sheep to cross. Later it was replaced with a makeshift pole bridge. Today there is no remnant of a bridge, but the area will forever be known as Sid's Leap.
