Joe Swasey is the youngest of the Swasey Brothers who ran horses and cattle on the San Rafael in the 1870s and into the next generation as well. The Swasey Brothers adventures and stories are as embedded in the San Rafael Swell as the fossils. They were acclaimed for their passion for horses. They all had excellent skills in horsemanship. Wesley Curtis, a historian of the San Rafael Swell, says "Old Timers still speak of their skill and prowess with their animals in awed respect."
