Orlon Mortensen, from Ferron, joined the CCCs and worked in Ferron Canyon. Every morning, rain, snow or heat, the boys would jump into the back of the truck that would take them to their specific jobs. They learned army rules and discipline. They did a lot of rock and shovel work building roads, dams, forest ranger stations, picnic grounds, bridges, etc. Part of Orlon's job as truck driver was to take the boys, who lived in more rural areas in Utah, home when they had finished their service. They enlisted for a year and could sign up for another year after that. They usually went home by train or bus, unless they lived in outlying areas that public transportation didn't reach.
