This man was an CCC Education Supervisor. He had defected from Russia when he was 12 years old, and had joined the army as soon as he was old enough. He was a retired officer when he was brought back into service to help with the CCCs. Educational Classes were offered to the young men such as typing, radio, printing, metal craft, leather craft, social manners, etc. Orlon Mortensen took a class in photography and developed all of his photos himself. Many of the young men were illiterate; 40,000 young men nation-wide learned to read while enlisted in the CCCs.
