During the uranium boom, Temple Mountain was the most active site on the San Rafael Swell. A shanty town sprung up that was called Temple City. Barbara Ekker from Hanksville, Utah and her husband joined in the frenzy. She said "My husband wanted to go out there and mine, so we took his mother's trailer and pulled it out there, and we mined uranium. Temple city was just trailers and a great big garage where they did all the repairs and stuff like that. You had to haul water. . .It was rough."
