In 1912 a USGS photographer, C.T. Lupton, took this photo of one of the flattops and a drilling rig on the San Rafael Swell. Oil Drilling began on the San Rafael Swell in the late 1800s. Geological conditions on the Swell looked promising for oil, and although drilling was done in many parts of the Swell, not enough was produced to be economical.
