This oil derrick was locaated in Salt Wash. Photograph was taken by USGS photographer, C.T. Lupton in 1911. Oil Drilling began on the San Rafael Swell in the late 1800s. Conditions on the Swell looked promising for oil, and although drilling was done in many parts of the Swell, not enough was produced to be economical.
