Drilling for oil on the San Rafael Swell began in the late 1800s. Conditions on the Swell looked promising for oil. Several rigs were set up in different areas to drill for oil This rig is located at the base of Window Blind Peak. Newspapers of the day ran long articles about how the oil deposits on the San Rafael were most likely to prove to be rich oil beds and it was a good time to invest in oil stock, but not much oil was ever found.
