Up to this time plowing was done with a team. A group of men saved their money and bought this steam engine. Owen Matheson was hired to operate it. It wasn't practical because it took too much fuel to heat the water to the point of making steam and to keep it going. A wagon with coal or wood had to follow the plough. In this photo large poplar trees along the sidewalk were being cut down and dragged away.
