CHARLES M. HEYBORNE Biography 1848 - 1935 Charles McMillan Heyborne was born in Launceston, Van Demansland, Tasmania, on t h e 21st of J a n u a r y , 1848, t h e son of John and Sarah Ann McMillan Heyborne. His f a t h e r was an English officer in charge of English forces in Australia and Tasmania. His mother was a matron in a h o s ~ i t a lin New Zealand. When Charles was four vears old, his f a t h e r died. His mother accepted t h e L.D.S. gospel in s y d n e y , Australia, and t h e family emigrated to America. They left Australia t h e 28th of May, 1856, and arrived in San Pedro, California on the 15th of August. 1856. They made their home in San Bernardino for about a year and a half and then moved to Cedar City, Utah, arriving there on t h e 24th of December. 1857. As a young man. Charles drove a six-mule team to Laramie. Wyoming to assist emigrants to Utah. He was ordained an Elder in t h e Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah on t h e 30th of October, 1871, when h e was married to Mary Ann Leigh. In 1883, he was called to fill an L.D.S. Mission to his native land of Australia, where he labored until 1885. Soon a f t e r r e t u r n i n g home from his mission he was ordained a High Priest and was set a p a r t a s t h e first Superintendent of t h e Y.M.M.I.A. of t h e Parowan Stake. which position he held for ten y e a r s . He took a team of horses to Manti where he worked on t h e L.D.S. Temple site for 58 days. He s e r v e d continuously for 55 years a s a Ward Teacher in the Cedar City Wards. Heyborne s e r v e d two and one half y e a r s a s Mayor of Cedar City and acted a s a City Councilman during three administrations. He was also City Marshal and City Watermaster. He was one of t h e founders of the Branch Normal School. During t h e Eleventh Session, he s e r v e d a s Chaplain in the House of Representatives of t h e State of Utah. He was an Indian War Veteran. For sixty y e a r s , h e was activelv eneaeed in most of t h e civil and relieious affairs of Cedar c i t y . On t h e 31st of October, 1922. Charles Heyborne Married Melissa Keziah Rollins Lee in t h e St. George Temple, his f i r s t wife having died on the 26th of July, 1921. During his last few y e a r s , he spent considerable time in doing Temple work. He died on the 27th day of December, 1935, one month short of being 88 y e a r s old.
