LEHl WILLARD JONES Biography 1854 - 1947 Lehi W . Jones was born November 15, 1854. t h r e e y e a r s a f t e r Cedar City was founded a s a base for development of t h e iron o r e deposits n e a r b y . He was born in t h e 'Old Fort' to Thomas and Sage T r e h a r n e Jones, Welsh immigrants. At the age of 16 h e took a contract for delivering mail by pony e x p r e s s between Cedar City and several southern Nevada mining towns, a job h e performed daily for six y e a r s prior to entering t h e University of Deseret in Salt Lake City. Utah. After completion of his mail c o n t r a c t , he t r a d e d t h e horses he had accumulated for cows and calves and e n t e r e d t h e cattle business. He was in this business his entire life, running one of t h e last great cattle h e r d s in this part of t h e Southwest. When his b r o t h e r . Kumen Jones, was called a s a member of t h e San Juan Mission, which made t h e historic t r i p across t h e Colorado River through t h e hole-in-the-rock, Lehi assisted bv drivina two h e r d s of cattle from Cedar Citv to t h e new mission. Lehi Jones was one of t h e founders of the Branch Normal School in 1897, and was an organizer of the first electric power company in Cedar City about 1905. He s e r v e d a s president and manager of t h e company until i t was sold in 1919. In 1905, he was elected the f i r s t president of t h e Cedar City Commercial Club, now t h e Chamber of Commerce. in which he held honorary membership during his lifetime. He held the position of Mayor from 1886 to F e b r u a r y 1888, and s e r v e d a s Iron County Commissioner, a s well a s City Councilman, Justice of t h e Peace, and City T r e a s u r e r . In 1921, h e donated land t o Iron County for t h e erection of a County Hospital, and s e r v e d a s chairman of t h e hospital for many y e a r s . He was chairman of t h e committee which, in 1923, raised $75,000 t o purchase a right-of-way as inducement to t h e Union Pacific Railroad to build a branch line into Cedar City. He was one of t h e organizers of the Cedar Mercantile and Livestock Company. He did much t o pioneer irrigation in t h i s a r e a , and was a member of t h e Newcastle Reclamation Company which f i r s t attempted to reclaim t h e vast farming a r e a , now being developed successfully with underground water, in t h e Beryl area. In o r d e r to s e r v e an L.D.S. Mission to t h e Southern S t a t e s , Lehi resigned a s Mayor in February of 1888. He s e r v e d a s Bishop over t h e Cedar Ward beginning in 1908, and h e worked on the construction of both t h e Manti and S t . George Temples. He married Martha Henrietta Lunt, daughter of Henry and Mary Ann Wilson L u n t , February 13, 1878. They parented eight sons and daughters-Willard T . , Henry L . , Kumen L . , Lehi M . , Erastus L . , William L . , Ann Jones Gardner, and Henrietta Jones Hintze.
