JOHN PARRY Biography 1841 - 1919 John P a r r y , son of John P a r r y a n d Winifred B a r k e r , was born in Newmarket. Flintshire, North Wales, on November 14, 1841. In 1855, a t the age of fifteen y e a r s , he came t o America with his p a r e n t s . They travelled t o Utah with t h e Edward Bunker Handcart Company, arriving October 2, 1856. In November, t h e family came to Cedar City where they made their home. John worked with his f a t h e r burning lime to make lime cement, the f i r s t in Southern Utah. He was also a stone d r e s s e r , a builder, and a c a r v e r of tombstones. For a time, he directed t h e Cedar City Bank, a n d was a member of t h e Cedar City Dramatics Company in 1865. He married Mary Ann Haight, d a u g h t e r of Isaac C. Haight, President of the Deseret Iron Company a n d President of the Cedar Stake. He was also in the militia s e n t b y Brigham Young to b r i n g the people from Berryville back t o Dixie after the Indians killed the B e r r y b r o t h e r s a t Pipe S p r i n g s . I n 1868, he was s e n t to England to bring a company of saints to Utah. He a r r a n g e d f o r passage for 534 souls on t h e steamship, Manchester, on J u n e 30, 1868. They arrived in New York City, July 12, a n d at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. July 2 2 , 1868. In 1875, t h e Cedar City Cooperative Cattle Company was organized with John P a r r y a s one of t h e directors. He was sent on a mission to England and Wales, a n d r e t u r n e d in 1877. P a r r y was Mayor of Cedar City twice, 1883-1886 and 1890-1892. During his term, h e helped initiate t h e project of building a City County Building in Cedar City. I n addition. John s e r v e d t h r e e terms a s Iron County's Representative to the Utah State Legislature. He was on the building committee for Old Main. P a r r y died at Cedar City. Utah in March of 1919.
