CHRISTOPHER J. ARTHUR Biography 1832 - 1919 Christopher Jones Arthur was born March 9, 1832, in t h e village of Abersychan, Monmouthshire, South Wales. His f a t h e r . Christopher Abel A r t h u r , and his mother, Ann Jones A r t h u r , were both Baptists. Trained by his f a t h e r in a s t o r e and bakehouse. Christopher was placed in a n academy near Bristol. Glouchestershire; but he r e t u r n e d home after eighteen months to be in charge of his f a t h e r ' s business. He worked a t t h e bakery warehouse until he and his f a t h e r and s i s t e r , Mary Ann, left for America. His father and mother had been converted to t h e L . D . S . C h u r c h ; however, his mother died prior to their d e p a r t u r e . Christopher was baptized on board t h e ship during the journey. They reached Salt Lake City September 2 6 , 1853, and were urged t o go to Cedar City to help with the Iron Works. On December 30, 1854, Christopher was married t o Caroline Eliza Haight, daughter of Isaac C. and Eliza Ann Haight. There were seven children born to this marriage. He was appointed t h e Deputy Secretary of the Deseret Iron Company. L a t e r , he acted a s t h e Deputy T r e a s u r e r a n d , subsequently, became a Director until t h e business closed in 1860. At t h a t time, he s t a r t e d making f u r n i t u r e . farming, and surveying for a livelihood. Starting in 1854, A r t h u r served over twenty years a s an elected City Councilman and Recorder, helping to draft the Cedar City Ordinances. He s e r v e d a s Mayor two y e a r s , beginning in August 1878. I n addition, he s e r v e d a s Secretary a n d T r e a s u r e r of the Cooperative Mercantile business which was established in Cedar City patterned a f t e r the Zion's Cooperative Mercantile a n d Manufacturing in Salt Lake City. I n this capacity he s t a r t e d his secretarial work in the east p a r t of John M . Higbee's granary in a room measuring about six by twelve feet. Later, he continued t h e business in a frame and log building purchased from Thomas Gower, which he moved t o a small lot on Main S t r e e t . He was also an Indian War Veteran, helping t o control the Indian uprisings between 1854 and 1867. Active in religious affairs throughout his life, Christopher Arthur fulfilled a n L . D. S. Mission to Great Britain from 1883 to November 1 , 1885, and s e r v e d a s Bishop of the Cedar Ward for several years. He was married four times--the other t h r e e wives were: Ann E .
