Sept. 2 6 , 1877 ...The Mayor was i n s t r u c t e d to procure a new rope hoisting for the Liberty Pole. Nov. 5 , 1877.. . a petition from the Female Relief Society praying for a piece of land on which t o establish a mulberry orchard was read. Granted. ( t o grow silk worms) Nov. 10. 1877.. . T h e committee on silk culture secured 6 lots for $300. Dec. 28, 1877.. . T h e Auditor reported finding $473.42 in t h e City ~ r e a s u 6 ,which agreed with t h e T r e a s u r e r ' s report and the s t u b s . Jan. 11. 1878.. .Mayor John Chatterley and councilors A r t h u r . Leigh, Duncan. Heyhorne, and Nielson p r e s e n t . The Mayor was instructed to purchase handcuffs and shackles for the use of t h e City Marshal. Peb. 1 6 . 1878.. .Marshal Heyborne resigned. The Council requested the services of Andrew Jensen in keeping the public square clear from crowds during t h e h o u r s of service tomorrow. Joseph S. Hunter was appointed a committee of one to erect a fence around the graveyard. April 2 , 1878.. .Edward P a r r y was sworn in a s Marshal. The Council discussed negotiations for 40 acres of property from Homer Duncan for $75 p e r acre. A petition was read concerning this property in behalf of the church interest stating that Bishop Klingen Smith did buy of Eliazer Edwards the g r a n t , privilege, power, and p r o p e r t y known in Cedar City a s the powder mill. (on the Homer Duncan p r o p e r t y ) This is, therefore, to ask of you to take into consideration the church claim on said p r o p e r t y a n d , if just, that in your purchasing t h e lands of Homer Duncan that you also incorporate said claims in your purchase that we may receive the deeds therefore a t your hands for which labor, e x p e n s e . and means layed o u t , we will reimburse you in full and a s in duty bound your petitioners will e v e r p r a y .
