Lewis Root. Joseph S . Hunter, a n d Kumen Jones to attend Council meeting T h u r s d a y n e x t . April 19. 1877.. .Joseph H. Smith. George H u n t e r , Lehi J o n e s , and George P e r r y J r . appeared a t Council meeting and were informed by t h e Mayor t h a t i t i s t h e wish of t h e Council t h a t they should act a s Policemen for Cedar City. They took the oath of office. The Water Committee reported t h a t t h e water h a s been changed from i t s p r o p e r channel in Joseph Sawyer's a n d Gamer Cosslett's lots causing the water to back u p into the street. May 10. 1 8 7 7 . . . A petition by George Wood asking for license to sell liquors and d r i n k s was r e a d . The Recorder was i n s t r u c t e d to inform George Wood t h a t , when he paid u p his back license, t h e Council would take action on t h e petition. June 2 . 1877.. . T h e Mayor informed the Council t h a t i t is the day to hear complaints from a n y persons who should consider themselves unjustly t a x e d . The list was r e a d . and t h e following taxes were remitted: Thomas Gower. Elna Ann Haight, Annabella Haight, Samuel Leigh. Daniel S. MacFarlane, Bengt Nelson, John P a r r y , H . C. Stewart, a n d Jane Spiking. The Mayor stated t h a t Bower Harris, a n d o t h e r s living on t h e west side of Main Street north of t h e Tithing Office, were desirous of having t h e water r u n in front of their lots for culinary p u r p o s e s . July 1 2 , 1877.. . T h e Mercantile Institution petitioned the Council for the privilege of erectlng a t a n n e r y on their p r o p e r t y directly back of t h e s t o r e . Aug. 15, 1877. . . T h e Cooperative Mercantile Institution was g r a n t e d t h e privilege of putting up hay scales in t h e s t r e e t in f r o n t of their s t o r e . ( 5 7 North Main) John Harris was allowed $40 for taking charge of the slaughterhouse and corral and keeping them clean from the 1 s t day of January A . D . , 1877, t o t h e 1 s t day of J a n u a r y 1878. Aug. 18, 1877.. . T h e Council met a s p e r adjoinment. Quorum not p r e s e n t . Adjourned until August 20th at early candlelight. Aug. 2 0 , 1877.. . T h e Mayor s t a t e d t h a t he had engaged t h e services of John Harris t o p u t a water spout into t h e slaughterhouse for t h e purpose of washing i t o u t , also to kill off t h e a n t s about t h e place which cover t h e meat when h u n g up in t h e building.
