Nov. 16. 1876.. .Petition of John V. Adams and 228 o t h e r s praying t h a t no more licenses be g r a n t e d for t h e disposal of intoxicating d r i n k s was r e a d . On motion, the wishes of said petitioners were accepted. Dec. 7, 1876. . .Councilor A r t h u r stated t h a t several parties in town a r e supposed to he selling liquors without licenses. Various methods of putting a stop t o i t were discussed. Dec. 9 , 1876.. .Francis Webster and George Hunter were called upon to wait upon George Wood for t h e purpose of learning what he intends doing in relation to taking out a liquor license and to t r y to persuade him to comply with t h e ordinance governing the sale of intoxicating d r i n k s . Dec. 21, 1676.. .Chairman of committee to wait upon George Wood reported t h a t he [Wood) offered to pay $30 p e r y e a r , and if the Council would not g r a n t him a license for t h a t sum, he would sell liquors without one. Jan. 1 7 , 1877.. .Lots owned b y the City were valued at $50 each. Mayor was i n s t r u c t e d to write to Salt Lake City a n d , if possihle, procure two pair of handcuffs for City purposes. Jens Nielson a n d Christopher J . Arthur were appointed a s a committee to p r e p a r e t h e Tithing Office cellar for the reception of prisoners. H. Leigh and R . W . Heyborne were assigned to get two policemen for Cedar City. Jan. 27, 1877.. . T h e County Assessor and Collector was assigned, a s compensation for 1876, 15% on all taxes assessed and collected. Feb. 17, 1877.. . T h e Mayor s t a t e d t h a t Hiram Perkins has finished his fencing contract on South S t r e e t , also t h a t someone has moved t h e line stakes out of place, in consequence of which seven rods of the fence i s out of place and (Council) recommended engaging Hiram Perkins t o move the same on the line. March 8. 1877.. . T h e committee on fencing was empowered to make a contract with Hiram Perkins a t t h e lowest possible rate--terms of payment to he capitol stock in t h e sheep h e r d . (Co-op h e r d ) April 1 4 . 1877.. .George Wood, Watermaster, made a r e q u e s t that the Council prohibit anyone turning the water from i t s proper channel. The committee appointed to find policemen reported that they had not been able to find anyone t o a c t .
