prove, however, that the manufacture of iron is an accomplished f a c t , and Iron County, with h e r vast coal fields and an inexhaustible amount of the best iron ore in the world, is destined in the near future to be a vast business center. I t needs b u t the magic touch of money, railroads, and business tact to develop the huge mountains of coal and iron that a r e here--a deposition of the rim of the Great American Basin. The y e a r , 1857, gave u s a new Wool Carding Machine, homemade in all of i t s p a r t s with the exception of the c a r d s . I t was a pattern of neatness and did its work well. Sheep were becoming more plentiful, and they were certainly needed. Our clothing was scant indeed, many of u s going barefoot to work, to meeting, and even to the dance. Our ingenuity was p u t to the test and our inventive skill was e brightened UD bv necessitv. W beaan to t u r n our attention to home manufacturers to supply o u r local wants. Tanneries, shoe s h o ~ s . f u r n i t u r e . the makine of combs, threshine machines, ' blacksmith wagon makers, nail machinery, e t c . . and, last though not least, a woolen factory was established and made from the raw material in our vicinity. The iron was furnished b y o u r furnace. Looms, spinning machine, carder, e t c . , were all made h e r e , and by a s good mechanics as a r e to he found anywhere in the world. In these years of scarcity and disappointment, the domestic spinning wheel and hand loom were not neglected. Many of our wives and daughters could take the wool from the sheep's back and wash, c a r d , s p i n , color, weave, and make it u p for their husbands, brothers, and s i s t e r s . Cotton, grown 60 miles south of u s , was taken and carded by hand for warping and sewing thread. Fairs were frequent and the exhibition of skill and enterprise was unique and marvelous. W were rich, e although sometimes we felt poor. The luxuries of life were scarce and d e a r . Itinerant merchants with elastic conscience would sell u s s u g a r a t $ 1 . 0 0 per pound. tea a t $ 5 . 0 0 per pound, Domestic at $ 1 . 0 0 per y a r d , prints a t 75q per y a r d , coffee a t $ 1 . 0 0 p e r pound, tobacco a t $ 1 . 0 0 for a six inch p l u g , and they would allow u s but $ 1 . 0 0 per bushel for grain. A hundred other little like necessities were sold a t from 100% to 5000% ahove cost. Grain was plentiful during these y e a r s , and no market. Our living was plain and simple and our health excellent; there were h u t few deaths having occurred from 1851 to 1860. Our past experience has made u s sober and grave, clever and ingenious, dignified and independent, and fond of domestic enjoyment. Yet, we can and have enjoyed our home dramatic talent, o u r bands of music, the dance, and the different outdoor games common to a country community. The social gathering of families and friends were, and are to this day, of frequent occurrence and bring much pleasure.
