SHERRELL VAN "JACK" SAWYERS Biography Jack Sawyers, t h e name h e usually goes b y , was born August 28, 1933. I n J o s e p h , Utah, to Bill Mac a n d Irene Miller Sawyers. He attended the f i r s t a n d second g r a d e in Joseph and completed his elementary schooling in Richfield, Utah, just a few miles away. He attended Junior High a n d High School in Tooele. Utah. While in High School, h e was active in s p o r t s , lettering in football, basketball, a n d t r a c k . He received t h e Dean Barris award for Outstanding Athlete a n d served a year a s Studentbody President. After completing two y e a r s of college, he s e r v e d a n L.D.S. Mission in the Western States. After his r e t u r n , he completed a B . S . Deeree a t Brieham Youne Universtiv in Provo. Utah on a foGball scholarGhip. In t h e fall of 1960. Jack beean teachine a t Cedar Hieh School in Cedar City, Utah, but l e f t the f i e i i of teaching r n 1971, when h e s t a r t e d selling insurance for Fidelity Union Insurance Company. The following year he moved to Security National, and six months later became an Agency Supervisor, with responsibilities in six western s t a t e s . With t h e purchase of t h e Cedar Cinemas in 1974, h e changed his profession once again a s he continued to operate t h a t business v e r y successfully. He was elected to t h e position of President of the Utah Theater Owner's Association in 1979, a n d elected 'Showman of t h e Year' in 1980. He also s e r v e d a s President of t h e Theater Owner's Association, representing t h e 1 2 western s t a t e s . Jack s e r v e d a s Mayor of Cedar City from 1978 until 1982. He was in t h e Bishopric of the Cedar City L . D . S . 9th Ward in 1977 and 1978; appointed to t h e State Land Board in 1979 a n d s e r v e d a s Chairman in 1981 a n d 8 2 ; member of P . O . S . T . ; member of t h e five counties Association of Government s t e e r i n g committee, s e r v i n g a s Chairman for one y e a r ; a member of M X local a n d s t a t e committees; member of the Utah State joint Highways Committee; a n d a member of the State Committee for t h e Restoration of Paiute Lands. Jack Sawyers married t h e former Jacklyn Barrick, and they a r e t h e p a r e n t s of two children--Jodi and J u s t i n .
