JOHN MOUNT HIGBEE Biography 1827 - 1904 John Mount Higbee began his life, May 6 , 1827, on a 25acre farm in Palestine, Ohio. He was baptized into t h e L.D.S. Church July 1 2 . 1835, b y Isaac Falls a t Shadcreek, Clay County, on the b a n k s of the Missouri River. During t h a t year h e moved with his p a r e n t s to Kirtland. Ohio where t h e y , in connection with t h e r e s t of t h e Saints of the locality, suffered t h e persecutions incident to t h e early history of the Saints. Upon t h e expulsion of t h e Saints from Nauvoo in 1846, t h e Higbees traveled with little o r no money. On t h e way across Iowa, John drove his f a t h e r ' s team taking t h e family to Mount Pisgah where his mother, Sarah Ann Voorhees, took sick from exposure a n d want of some of the necessities of life, a n d died on t h e 15th of J u n e , 1846, a t t h e age of 4 1 . She departed this life leaving four children--John Mount. Silas, Sariah, a n d Harriet. When the Higbee family left Winter Q u a r t e r s . April 9, 1847, John M . took care of them. a s his father had been chosen a s one of t h e h u n t e r s of t h e pioneer p a r t y to Utah being detailed by Brigham Young to f e r r y wagons across the Upper Crossing of the Platte River where t h e family joined him, August 2 0 , 1847. They continued their journey on to Utah. arriving in Salt Lake City. September 26. 1847. John Higbee r e t u r n e d to the Missouri River in 1848 to assist the Saints who were traveling westward. A year later he traveled to California, b u t r e t u r n e d to Utah in 1850. In 1853, he was called with o t h e r s from Utah Valley to locate settlements in Southern Utah. He married Mary Clark, daughter of Samuel a n d Rebecca Garner Clark, November 22, 1853, in Provo, a n d brought her with him to Cedar City, which a t t h a t time was the most southern settlement in Utah. Because of the d a n g e r from Indians. Highee was called by t h e c h u r c h leaders to t h e office of Captain of Company C of a battalion of infantry of the Iron Military District of the militia of the Territory of Utah, on J a n u a r y 9 , 1854. After the militia was abandoned. the "Long Valley Volunteers" were organized on March 25, 1866, to g u a r d against the Indians. John M . Higbee became a businessman, serving a s Superintendent of t h e Co-op Store f o r many y e a r s . Being active in civic affairs, he served as City Councilman for several y e a r s , a s Mayor for four y e a r s , a n d a s City J u d g e . He married Eunice Bladen in about 1860. Later. she and h e r children joined him in Arizona where they lived a t S t . David, Cochise County; however, they eventually r e t u r n e d to Cedar City where he died in 1904.
