HENRY HUNTER LUNT Biography 1885 - 1975
A native of Cedar City, Henry ( H a r r y ) H. Lunt was born November 24, 1885, t h e eldest son of Henry W . and Roselia Hunter Lunt. He attended school in Cedar City and graduated from t h e Branch Normal in 1905. He married Mary Jeanette C o r r y , d a u g h t e r of William H. a n d Elizabeth P a r r y C o r r y , October 5, 1911. They became t h e p a r e n t s of t h r e e children--Henry C . , Marion, a n d Richard. His wife passed away in 1923. Henry H. s e r v e d two terms on t h e Cedar City Council in 1912 a n d 1914. He was elected Mayor in 1938, a n d s e r v e d for four consecutive terms. He was appointed Postmaster in 1923 a n d s e r v e d twelve years. He s e r v e d on t h e committee t h a t was instrumental in bringing t h e s p u r line of t h e Union Pacific Railroad from Lund to Cedar City. One of t h e highlights of his civic endeavors was t h e revival a n d restoration of t h e Bank of Southern Utah a f t e r t h e c r a s h during the depression of the 1930's. Lunt s e r v e d two terms a s Iron County Representative to the State Legislature in 1945 a n d 1947. He s e r v e d a s Secretary a n d Vice-president of t h e Chamber of Commerce a n d remained active in t h a t organization for many y e a r s . He was also a life member of t h e Rotary Club. Among his many religious affiliations was an appointment a s Bishop of t h e Cedar East Ward in 1918. He s e r v e d a s Bishop again s t a r t i n g in 1942, t h i s time over the Cedar First Ward. His main occupation in life was t h a t of a merchant, serving a s t h e Manager of the Cedar City Mercantile a n d Live Stock Company. After retiring from public office, h e remained b u s y in livestock management a n d ranching. He s e r v e d on t h e Livestock Show Committee f o r several y e a r s a n d was also v e r y active in the National Wool Grower's Association. He died J a n u a r y 13. 1975. Councilmen--Kenneth Macfarlane, William A r t h u r Jones, Oscar Larson. Leland S. Betenson, a n d Also, Mayor elect H. H. Lunt a n d Dr. J. W . Bergstrom. Councilman elect Myron F. Highee a n d T r e a s u r e r elect Rhoda P. Webster. Mayor Hunter r e p o r t e d t h a t City Attorney Durham Morris would swear in t h e incoming officers, a n d their Bonds were approved.
