Excerpts from Cedar City Council Minutes Jan. 1. 1934.. .Mayor and Council met with the outgoing Mayor and Council a t 12 noon. After making his report and recommendations to the incoming Mayor and Council, Mayor Granger t u r n e d the meeting over to Mayor Charles R. Hunter. Mayor Hunter advised the Council to reconvene the next day. Jan. 2 , 1934 ... City Council met as per adjournment a t 7:30 p.m. Present: Mayor C. R . Hunter, Councilmen--Dr. J . W . Bergstrom, J. P. Fuller, Kenneth Macfarlane, Samuel F. Leigh, and Melvin R . Thorley. Mayor Hunter made the appointments of the Standing Committees a s follows:
Waterworks and Irrigation Samuel F. Leiqh Melvin R. Thorley City Park. Cemetery, & Public Property Dr. J. W. Bergstrorn J. P Fuller . Police, Public Safety and Judiciary Kenneth Macfarlane Samuel L Leigh . Finance Melvin R. Thorley Dr. J. W. Bergstrom Streets, Sidewalks and Sewer J. P. Fuller Kenneth Macfarlane
Mayor Hunter made the following appointments: Attorney--R. J . Shay. City Sexton--James Fisher, Poundkeeper--0rson Haight.

Jan. 3, 1934.. . T h e ordinance regulating the sale and distribution of beer (3.2"s was read. After same was discussed for some time, ordinance p a s s e d , on motion of S. F. Leigh. ( T h i s was after the repeal of the 18th Amendment) Jan. 4 , 1934 ...City Manager P e r r y reported that Mr. William R. Palmer, County Distributor of R.F. C. Government Funds (Public Works Act--W.P.A. I , will have ready soon a crew that will be available for the City to use in gravelling sidewalks and s t r e e t s , and he would advise the matter be r e f e r r e d to the Committees on Streets so the City will be prepared to use the crew. Matter was discussed of appointing someone to act as Office Manager, to be in charge of the City Office [then in the Bank of Southern Utah Building), to be kept open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. all days but Sunday--to attend to all business of City. On motion of Councilman Bergstrom. Herbert P. Haight was appointed as Office Manager a t a salary of $ 4 0 per month. The Mayor appointed A r t h u r Nelson a s City Marshal; Daniel B . Clark as Night Marshal: Dr. A . L. Graff a s City Health Officer; Randall W . Lunt as Park Caretaker: C . William Macfarlane a s Airport Caretaker; Earl Merryweather as City Watermaster; and Alonzo Ahlstrom a s S u p t . of Streets.
