WALTER K . GRANGER Biography 1888 - 1978 Walter Keil Granger was born October 11, 1888, in S t . George, Utah, to Walter and Annie Keil Granger. He served an L . D . S. Mission in Georgia, a f t e r which h e married Hazel Dalley, J u n e 6 , 1912. He served a s Bishop of the Cedar Third Ward for nine y e a r s . In 1914, h e was appointed Postmaster in Cedar City, a position he held until 1 9 2 2 ; however, he took a leave of absence to join t h e Marines during World War I and s e r v e d overseas for 18 months. Walter Granger was elected Mayor of Cedar City in 1 9 2 4 and again in 1930, a f t e r which he s e r v e d t h r e e two-year terms in the Utah Legislature. from 1933 to 1938. during which time he was elected Speaker of t h e House. I n 1940, he was elected t o t h e U.S. House of Representatives from Utah's First District. During his six terms, he s e r v e d on t h e House Ways and Means Committee and on several Agricultural Committees and Sub-committees. Through his e f f o r t s , R.O.T.C. Units were established a t S.U.S.C. and B.Y.U. during World War 11. Granger lived in Arizona between 1962 and 1975 a n d . while t h e r e , h e was appointed t o t h e Federal Appeals Board for t h r e e y e a r s . He and his wife r e t u r n e d to Cedar City in 1975, and h e was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree from S.U.S.C. in 1976. He died in Cedar City on April 21, 1978. From: Iron County Record
Excerpts from Cedar City Council Minutes Jan. 7, 1924.. .Bond of Walter K. Granger a s Mayor of Cedar City, together with certified copy of Minute Entry from Records of Clerk of District Court, was presented for approval. Councilman Edward J . Palmer introduced and moved the adoption of t h e following resolution: WHEREAS a copy of t h e minute e n t r y of the records of the District Court a s certified by the Clerk thereof under seal of said Court r e a d s a s follows: "Walter K . Granger, Plaintiff, v s J. G . Pace, Defendant. This cause come on for hearing at this time on the petition of Walter K. Granger, praying for an order of the Court to set aside and annul the City Election of Cedar City Municipal Corporation for November 6 , 1923. Witnesses for the plaintiff were sworn, examined, and testified a s well a s documentary evidence being produced, the Court being fully advised in t h e premises ordered a recount of said ballots cast a t said election: whereupon, the Court recounted said ballots and finds the Plaintiff elected to t h e
