J u n e 29, 1923 . . . [Excerpts from Iron County Record) "President of t h e United S t a t e s . Warren G . Hardine. a n d p a r t y arrived in Cedar City J b n e 27, 1923 on t & new railroad, and Mayor Parley Dalley a n d his official City welcoming committee were on h a n d . For weeks t h e people of Southern Utah have been on the qui vive in anticipation of t h e visit of t h e President. People from e v e r y p a r t of Southern Utah were p r e s e n t , t h e Visitors began total number being estimated a t 6 , 0 0 0 . arriving Tuesday night a n d c a r a f t e r c a r drove into Cedar u p to the time of t h e arrival of t h e President's Special. After greeting a large numher of t h e t h r o n g the President with t h e other g u e s t s , which included Governor of Utah Charles R . Maybe a n d wife, Secretary of t h e Interior Hubert Work and wife. Speaker of t h e House Frederick Gillette, Secretary of Agriculture Henry C . Wallace, and Utah Senator Reid Smoot, the p a r t y proceeded p a s t the new hotel and on Main S t r e e t . Fifty special policemen [ex-servicemen) kept the s t r e e t clear of people a n d guarded the s t r e e t from top to bottom. As t h e g u e s t s were conveyed past t h e throngs of people, children threw roses in front of the President's c a r . When the p a r t y had driven through t h e principal thoroughfare of t h e City, i t proceeded on the way to Zion Canyon, t h e fourteen c a r s in t h e procession traveling about one h u n d r e d y a r d s a p a r t . They stopped at each settlement along the way where t h e r e was similar celebrating. The p a r t y arrived back a t Cedar City a t 8 : 3 0 p.m. where a l a r g e r crowd of people were gathered to hear t h e twenty minute speech given by President Harding. Several of the other members of the g u e s t s also spoke. So ended t h e day on which a President of o u r nation visited t h e people f o r the f i r s t time in h i s t o r y , a n d a day t h a t will never be forgotten by t h e people who participated in welcoming t h e President of t h e United States a n d t h e First Lady of this land. " July 2 6 . 1923.. .Proposition of Mr. S h a y , in behalf of t h e American Legion to lease the Fairgrounds, was considered b y t h e Council. Referred to Judiciary Committee. A question arose a s to whether o r not t h e dancing pavilion had been constructed to comply with t h e Fire District Ordinance. On motion of Councilman Foster, t h e Mayor appointed Councilmen Palmer a n d Jones a s a committee to investigate bathing conditions a t t h e City P a r k . Aug. 2 , 1923.. .Motion by Councilman Palmer t h a t t h e City sell to Mr. Sargent t h e land lying south of a designated s t r e e t south of the Cemetery. Robinson and Palmer voting for a n d Jones a n d Williams against the motion. Mayor cast his vote in favor of selling t h e p r o p e r t y a n d , t h e r e f o r e , the motion carried.
