ELIAS MORONI CORRY Biography 1884 - 1947 Elias Moroni Corry was born in Cedar City. Utah. February 2 1 , 1884, the son of William Henry and Elizabeth Louise P a r r y Corry. William Henry Corry was a blacksmith, having followed the same occupation a s his f a t h e r , George Corry. E . M . Corry lived in Cedar City all his life. He attended Branch Normal School a n d gained f u r t h e r education a t B.Y.U. Academy in Provo, Utah. He was called a s a missionary to n o r t h e r n California, leaving Cedar City June 10. 1903. After his r e t u r n . he married Abish Jones. daughter of Uriah T r e h a r n e a n d Mary Alice Higbee J o n e s , in t h e Salt Lake Temple. June 6 . 1907. At that time, h e was Assistant Cashier of the Bank of Southern Utah, and Uriah T . Jones was President. At about 33 years of age, he was elected Mayor of Cedar City. About t h i s time Lyle [ a s E. M . Corry was called) became more involved in farming a s an avocation, which he did with his b r o t h e r , Willard. However, a f t e r several y e a r s , they divided their p r o p e r t i e s . The influenza epidemic of 1917 was raging a t t h a t time, and many people died. Lyle was called to be Bishop of t h e Cedar West Ward on J u n e 2 1 , 1 9 2 1 . which office h e held for 1 3 y e a r s . During his t e n u r e a s Bishop, the Second Ward Chapel, on t h e corner of 200 South a n d 200 West, was built a n d was completed and paid for in 1926. Financial conditions in t h e County were not v e r y good a n d in December of 1931, t h e Bank of Southern Utah closed i t s doors, which was a g r e a t s e t back for t h e people of Cedar City and to E. M. He then devoted his time to selling insurance and farming. He worked for some time with the Utah Wool Marketing Association, which organization later joined t h e National Association. After several farming v e n u r e s , E. M . and his son Elwood opened an office in 1939 a n d organized the Cedar Real Estate Company, of which Elwood took over the management while E. M . carried on his wool marketing and farm business. E. M . Corry a n d his wife were t h e p a r e n t s of eight children--Virginia. Elma. Inez, R u t h , Beth, Elwood, Melvin, and Lloyd. Following y e a r s of intermittent poor health, Elias M. Corry died October 10, 1947, leaving a loved and respected name in the community. From: Elwood C o r r y , a son
