A r e u o r t of Erastus Snow concernine a t r i o to Cedar City ~ e c e m b e r . 1853, taken from L.D.S. j o u r n a l ' dated Dec. 6 . 1853. s t a t e s : "On t h e eve of o u r d e p a r t u r e we deemed i t a d v ~ s a b l et o recommend t h e organization of Cedar City, a n d nominated t h e Mayor, Aldermen a n d Councilors for t h e consideration of t h e people. "

April 4 . 1857.. .A mass meeting was held in Cedar City. Taken from Cedar City Stake Journal ( S . U. S. C. WRP) in t h e Special Collections L i b r a r y , t h e minutes of which a r e a s follows: "April 4 , 1857, Saturday. 7 o'clock p.m. A mass meeting was called to nominate t h e members of a new Council for the City. Opening p r a y e r b y Richard Harrison. Moved that the Honorable Isaac C. Haight ( t h e n Mayor) take t h e chair--seconded a n d carried unanimously. The Honorable Isaac C. Haight was nominated Mayor for t h e ensuing term. The Honorable Richard Harrison, Joshua T. Willis. E s q . , Robert Wiley, E s q . . and P . K . Smith, Esq. were nominated Elias Morris, E s q . , Ira Allen. Esq. , M r . Samuel Aldermen Pollock, M r . George Wood, M r . James H. Stratton ( r e s i g n e d ] , Mr. Charles Hopkins, a n d Samuel D. White. Esq.. were nominated Councilors. Next business on docket was t h e cow herd. P . K . Smith moved t h a t i t be 24 c e n t s p e r head for each cow a n d also young stock kept about t h e City, o r pay the herd bill a t t h e r a t e of 3 c e n t s p e r head. Carried. Voted t h a t t h e young stock be s e n t to Pinto Creek for t h e season. Dismissed b y p r a y e r . Honorable Isaac C. Haight, Chairman: George K . Bowering, Secretary.
