URIAH TREHARNE JONES Biography 1861 - 1929 Uriah T r e h a r n e Jones was born Feb. 11, 1861 in Cedar City. Iron County, Utah, t h e son of Thomas and Sage Treharne Jones. He had a twin s i s t e r , Sarah Ann, and they were the youngest of a family of seven children. The Jones family had to work h a r d to make a living, so t h e boys worked a t freighting and other odd jobs. Uriah had v e r y little formal education, b u t he studied and read a g r e a t deal a n d became very well informed. When h e was twelve years old, h e began working in t h e Co-op 'Store. Later h e ran t h e Jones Brother's Store in what was later t h e Knell Block. Uriah T . married Mary Alice Higbee, daughter of John Mount and Mary Clark Higbee, Feb. 7 , 1883. Seven children were born t o t h i s marriage--Abhish. Alma T r e h a r n e , I r e n e , Mary Malicent, U . Ashton, Zelma, and Emron Higbee Jones. Uriah was baptized J u n e 20. 1869: labored for some time a s a home missionary in t h e Parowan L.D.S. Stake, and chosen a s a member of t h e High Council in 1886. Dec. 2 2 . 1888, h e was called t o officiate a s a Counselor in the Bishopric of Cedar City, which position he held until March 2 1 , 1892, when he was s e t a p a r t t o preside over t h e Parowan Stake of Zion a s Stake President. He held this position for 1 7 y e a r s . Uriah was a v e r y prominent man in religious and civic circles. He held t h e position of Senator t o t h e Utah Legislature for some time. He was the President of the Bank of Southern Utah. Professionally, h e was a farmer and livestockman. Uriah s e r v e d a s Mayor of Cedar City for most of one y e a r due t o a leave of absence of Mayor J. S. Woodbury to attend school. Uriah was a member of the City Council a t t h e time and was appointed t o act a s Mayor during 1910. He died in Cedar City, Utah in F e b r u a r y , 1929. From:

Excerpts from Cedar City Council Minutes April 7 , 1910 ... Committee on Cemetery recommended that t h e t h r e e lots on the west of t h e p r e s e n t Indian burial plot be s e t aside for t h e purpose of Indian burials, and that said lot numbers h e so designated on t h e Cemetery Plat. April 13, 1910 ...Resolved that after April 14, i t shall be unlawful for any person to leave a n y dead animal o r fowls o r any dead carcass within one-fourth mile of a n y of t h e inhahitated portion of t h e City, unless said carcasses a r e b u r n e d o r buried a t least two feet deep.
