MATTHEW CARRUTHERS Presiding Elder 1852 Matthew C a r r u t h e r s was born J a n u a r y 15, 1811, in Scotland. He married Isabella McDonald in 1841. After his arrival in Cedar City late in 1851, t h e position of presiding Elder was assigned to him. He was t h e City's civic a n d ecclesiastical Leader until May, 1852. Henry Lunt was assigned a s Captain over a military e s c o r t , Company F , t h a t arrived in Cedar City Nov. 11, 1851. In February of 1852. Henry Lunt s t a t e s in his journal a s follows: "Had considerable counsel with Brother C a r r u t h e r s a n d called a meeting in t h e evening in Brother Chatterley's house. Brother Matthew C a r r u t h e r s delivered a very appropriate a d d r e s s a n d desired Brother W. C. Mitchell to engage in p r a y e r , a f t e r which h e proposed t h a t Henry Lunt be his First Councilor and John Easton his Second Councilor. He felt t h a t these were dictated t o him b y the Spirit of God. They were unanimously elected, a f t e r which Henry L u n t , R. Wiley, a n d Joseph Chatterley were chosen a s a committee for public works. I [ L u n t ) was also elected Clerk a n d James Whittaker, Assistant Clerk. In t h e evening Brother Wiley a n d myself attended a council meeting on public works." A l e t t e r from L.D. S. Journal History, written to Governor Brieham Youne from Elder Matthew C a r r u t h e r s of Cedar F o r t , 1;on c o u n t y , dated Feh. 5 , 1852, s t a t e s : "To Governor Young: In a s much a s I have been appointed to preside in this place. I have considered i t my duty to avail myself of the p r e s e n t opportunities now offered t o s e n d you a l e t t e r , b y Brother Joseph Chatterley, relative to o u r p r e s e n t position and prospects in t h e Coal Creek settlement. Knowing a s I do the strong anxiety of your mind to get iron manufactured from t h e materials s o profusely scattered over t h e surface of the e a r t h in this locality for t h e u s e of the T e r r i t o r y a n d the upbuilding of the Kingdom of God. " Also from L.D.S. Journal, [Library No. CH.m.h. 1514). . . . "Feb. 10. 1852, Cedar City was c h a r t e r e d a n d , shortly a f t e r , municipal government was established. " A l e t t e r from t h e Feb. 21, 1852 Deseret News, written by Matthew C a r r u t h e r s on J a n . 3 . 1852. to George A. Smith States: "Respected Sir: Shortly a f t e r your departure (from Parowan). Brother Henry L u n t , at t h e head of a portion of the b r e t h r e n destined for this place, went down [ t o Coal Creek) a n d built a good substantial corral, mostly with the driftwood t h a t lay scattered on the h a n k s of t h e creek.
