Information contained in a letter written b y George A . Smith, November 5. 1851 ( t h e day these companies were organized), was published in the Deseret News, November 2 9 , 1851, as follows: ' I . ..Yesterday a site was surveyed for a fort and stock corral on Coal Creek, some 20 miles from Parowan. Today a company has been organized to commence immediate operations on the construction of the new post. They a r e mostly comprised of English, I r i s h , Scotch, and Welsh miners and iron manufacturers. They have also been organized into two companies of militia. Matthew C a r r u t h e r s i s the major. They will commence Monday to p u t up the corral; after which, they will move their families, who a r e remaining h e r e , and encamp in their corral until their fort is completed."
