JOHN VARLEY ADAMS Biography 1832 - 1919 John Varley Adams was born August 17, 1832, in Rounds, North Hamptonshire, England, the son of Thomas and Rebecca Varley Adams. He was t h e fifth son of eleven children. John was p u t to work early in life and learned the t r a d e of shoe and boot making. He realized t h a t education was very important and s p e n t every s p a r e moment s t u d y i n g . At the age of 18. John joined the L.D. S . Church and was baptized J u n e 25, 1850. On February 15. 1853. he left his native land for Salt Lake City. Utah, on t h e ship Elvira Owens. After a voyage of over six weeks, h e arrived in New Orleans and continued on to Salt Lake City, reaching his destination on October 10. 1853. In a few days he was called to join t h e f i r s t rifle company of soldiers t h e r e under the command of Captain Hardy. On April 9 , 1857, John married Mary Ann Bailey, one of the f i r s t Handcart girls; a n d , in t h e fall of the same year, they were called to settle in Cedar City, Utah. Eleven children were born to t h i s marriage. Adams was called by Brigham Young t o go to Missouri to assist t h e L.D. S . emigrants across t h e plains, among which were his b r o t h e r , Thomas, and family. He left Salt Lake City in April of 1863, acting a s Captain and Chaplin of the Company. On t h e way home, in October, his b r o t h e r died in Nephi and was buried a t one of t h e settlements in Utah in a coffin made from the lumber from a wagon box which was given to John by a kind Saint, with a promise that the debt would be repaid. Several years went b y , b u t John eventually kept his promise b y making his creditor two pairs of beautifully cobbled shoes, which were appreciated more than money. In t h e late 60's, John was called to Dixie [ S t . George) to help find suitable places for people t o settle. He was a member of t h e f i r s t Cedar City Drama Club and organized the first literary class in t h e area. The Indians in this area were a constant worry, so a watch tower was built east of the bowery: a n d , when the drum beat from the tower, i t s t r u c k t e r r o r into t h e h e a r t s of all. Later, when a bell was made at t h e Iron Works, i t s peal r a n g out for d a n g e r , fire, funerals, parties, and all devotional services, and school. At t h e time of t h e grasshopper famine, Adams was able t o save a n acre of wheat, but i t had t o be dried b y the fire before i t could be threshed because, when t h e wheat was cut and shocked, i t rained for six weeks. John V. Adams was Mayor of Cedar City for one term and was a member of the City Council for several terms. He had charge of all donations for t h e poor for over twenty y e a r s . He was a school teacher a s well a s a cobbler.
