JOSEPH T . WILKINSON Biography 1847 - 1919 Joseph T . Wilkinson was born in Manchester. England March 26, 1847. His f a t h e r , Charles Wilkinson, a n d mother, Sarah Hughes Wilkinson, together with t h e t h r e e childrenJoseph Thomas, Sara J a n e , a n d Mary--joined t h e L.D.S. Church a n d s e t sail for America November 1855. The two girls died a n d were buried in Iowa City, and t h e mother died shortly a f t e r reaching Salt Lake City in J a n u a r y 1857. Joseph's f a t h e r remarried in 1862 a n d moved to Nephi with the family, then to t h e 'Muddy' ( S t . Thomas, Nevada), and later to St. George. Joseph T . married Elizabeth Emily Wells December 31. 1868, in St. George, Utah. Five children were born to this union. They moved to Hebron where Joseph helped in constructing t h e Deseret Telegraph Line to Pioche, Nevada. In July 1880 his wife died a n d was buried in Leeds. Utah. Later Joseph married Jane S . Wells, a half s i s t e r of his first wife. In t h e fall of 1887 they sold their home in Leeds and moved to Cedar City for b e t t e r educational opportunities for t h e children. Nine children were b o r n to this second marriage. Wilkinson was an efficient wheelwright, a blacksmith, c a r p e n t e r , and cabinet maker. He also was involved in considerable farming a n d teaming. He studied law a n d was admitted t o practice in the Utah District Courts before the t u r n of t h e c e n t u r y . He was also associated in t h e publication of t h e local newspaper. Iron County Record. He s e r v e d a s Justice of t h e Peace, was active in c h u r c h affairs, a n d served a s Mayor of Cedar City for two y e a r s . In addition, h e s e r v e d a s County Attorney in 1895 a n d 1896. In t h e later y e a r s of his life he was employed b y Cedar Electric Company a s a meter r e a d e r , collector, a n d worker a t the hydro-electric generating plant in Cedar Canyon. Joseph T . Wilkinson was a great s u p p o r t e r of education, having t a u g h t school for several y e a r s in Leeds, Utah. In 1875 he r e a d a n extensive p a p e r a t t h e S t . 'George Normal School Examination which was published in t h e book. Our Pioneer Heritage. The following is a quote from t h i s work: "If we s t u d y carefully t h e biographies of distinguished men, we shall in almost e v e r y case find their g r e a t n e s s and renown to have been achieved by e a r n e s t a n d persevering s t u d y . As t h e cultivation of t h e mind is of so much importance, i t necessarily follows t h a t t h e profession t o which we a r e the most indebted for instruction should be of corresponding importance."
