The United States came out of World War I the richest nation in the world. Except for a brief depression in 19?0-21 the ten years following World War I were yean of great prosperity. \Ian? men tried to get rich by buying and sellingstock on the stock market. This "golden era" came to an end in Oct. 19251 when the United States, with other countries, fell into a great depression. By 1932, the American people were earning only ahout one-half the money they had carned in 1929. Thousands of l x d s and other businesses closed, ahout 10 million people lost their job^. The Bank of Southern Utah closed its doors, with all the other l m k s , and the people of Cedar City faced a devastating crisis, as did the rest of the world. ?'hey handed together to restore their economy. Lehi W. Jones was made bank president ahout this time and he, with the memhers of the Board, worked to lmrrow enough capital from Cedar City citizens to re-opm the l ~ a n k .By doin%this, the bank eventually opened and all the money was paid hack within 8 years. Lehi was among those who loaned money to the hank.' T h e following appeared in the .Call Lake Trihzme in 1947 : "In 1932 Arr. Jones accepted one of the mmt important position? of his career. Then 78, he was named presidcnt of the Bank of Southern Utah after a reorsanization w11ii.h was effected after the in.titntion ran into depression difficulties. H e was Utah's oldest hank president."
