Directors. In 1926 the A.H. Rollo and Sons C:o. was formed and the Iron County Rrcoid continued public a t 'lon. T h e Rocky Mountain Bell Telcphonc Co. was grantcd a franchise to operate through Utah in t\ugust, 1902. 'I'here were very few telephones installed in Cedar Citv and the operation was on a very snlall scale. One operator could handle all the calls. T h e switrhhoard was set u p in a small room on the upper floor of the Knell Block Building. 'I'here were only three operators who traded off at the switchboard: Uriah Jones, Rebecca Ford, and Irene Mackelprang. When the first telephones were put it1 Cedar City there were only five. Dr. Middleton had one, there was one at the Mermntile Store and one at the doctor's office. The other two telephones were put in at the Uriah Jones home and the Lehi Jones home. The rings for all the phones were heard on each of t h e m . T h e first local Telephone C h was organized in 1907 with T. Jed Jones and J.S. Woodhury actilig as presidents." Kumen L. gave his father $21.00 for seven sheep he had sold to some Japancse people on the desert. Lehi used the money to pay his boys for hauling water. H e gave young Lehi M . $10.00, and Will and Rass each $5.00. Lehi hi.asked his father what to do with his money and he was told to put it in on the new Telephone Co. Lehi M. followed his father's advice and made his first investment.'' The Jones Brothcn h i l t the building whirh later became known as the Knell Block, on the south corucr of Main Street and Lincoln Avenue in Cedar Cit\-. The Jones Furniture Store was on the ground floor in the south half of the huilding and the Post Office and Bank were in the north half. There were offices upstairs and a Stake ;\rademy School, along with the telephone office. Later the building was sold to Benjamin Knell.'"
