So after spcnding Christmas and New Year's with the f o l k s - started homewal-d on the 2nd of January in company with B m Pcrkins. I had two horses and a little mule that my trother, Kumen, had given nie and promised me 1 would not he left afoot as long as I had that mule. I packed one of the horses and I-ode the mule most of the way. Ben Pcrkins had two horses - packed one and rode the other. We rode PI-ettyfast. The third day, we were in a bad snowstorm. We ~ m t h e d river in the evening, the the snow ahout a foot deep and still hlowinx and snowing. It took us 50me time to get the man t h x ran the ferry h a t to see us. 1:inally. he cam? out for some wood and he caught sight of us. He soon came over, and we all piled in the little hoat - horses and all. Ben and I held the horses in the middle of the hoat and we landed all r i ~ h on the homet xmrd side." "We could not get accomodatio~isfor ourselvcs nor our horses, so we parked up and started up the canyon that night. The snow was eightteen inches and very cold. We ramped in some trees, tied our horse up to the trees, fed them a little grain that we had, scraped the snow away the hest we could for our camp, started a fire, and got along finr. 'The next day was very cold and snow deep - could not travel fast. O n the ninth of Jan. wc reached Ben Pelkin's home in the little town of Teasdale in Ral~bit Valley. I stayed there the nest day. His wife treated me finel and I got rested and w a m ~ e d good. It was extremel! cold weather. up O n the 1 lth, I started out alone for home. As I came over the mountain from 1,oa to the head of Grass Valley, the snow was ahout four feet deep. 'The mail from Koosharem to Loa had not heen through for a few days. bnt the d a y I went over, therc had been two or three horse tracks over. ;ihout five niilcs'from Koosharem I overtook a man on horsehack he was snowl,lind - could not bee anything. I got on lead, and his horse followed me on. I got him to the hotel. Next mornins, I had expected to go down Grars Valley, hut I was told there had heen no travel that w i y for some time. so I went North and came onto the Sevier River some distance north of Richfield -- came up Clear Creek Canyon and onto Cove Fort.
