Lehi W. Jones's parents were imn~igrantsto America from Wales, and wet-e pioneers to the Utah Territory. Prior to their arrival at Council Bluffs in 1849, and their subsequent journey west across the plains to Mormon country, there were many L.D.S. people who had traveled the s m e journey and opened the way for the thousands of people yet to the come. There was a great driving force l~ehind exodus of these peop l e - first, from a foreign country to .4merica, and second, from the Eastcln United States to the vast unknown rexion, simply referred to as the h'esr. There were various reasons for the rugged people of that era lo hcad out towards the wild unsettled frontier, to face the elements, the wild animals, and the savaxe Indians. The Gold Rush of California lured many people to the west. Some, who ventured west, were simply ;~dventurousin spirit and were searching for wealth and land and for more productive arras that were frcc for the taking. And there were those who were looking. for new frontieri where they could live in peacc and tranquility withont perserutinn or ::ovcrnmental restrictions. Many people had lived undcr [he tyranny of f o r e i ~ n monarchies and had come to Amerira only to find other social prcsuures and religous restrictions which made their lives almost unbearable. 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wa5. first organized :\pril 6, 1830 in Palmyra, N.Y., Insed upon the revelation received I)?
