in each box was one of Aunt Sarah's (as she was known) cheeses.' Parley wrote the following about his memories of the Spencer Ranch: Mother had been losing so many cows, she said she would se11 the cows and sheep in order to make a down payment on the Spencer place. We were now able to make a little progress financially and live better. There was a creek on the place and we used the water for house use, garden and a patch of potatoes. Our com and other crops were dry farm. We had a lot of company. Freighters would stop by oflen and mother wouldn't charge them anythmg for food or lodging. However, she would charge outside people, like engineers and hunters, cents for meals and lodging. They would aiways pay more. We had some cows. Sometimes we would milk as many as 150 cows during the summer and mother would make cheese and butter from the milic. Although we boys were smail, we would start milking cows as soon as we could pul1 a teat. The smaller ones would go and feed caives. There were a lot of stoms during the summer when we milked. Sometimes we would be walking in manure halfivay up to our knees. Lots of times 1 would see mother go in there with her 'skirt and red flannel petticoat pinned up. One time 1 saw a cow come and knock the cow she was milking, knocking mother down in al1 that mess. We also raised potatoes. Heaton and 1 took them by wagon to the San Pedro mines to sell. 1 was about 15 years old at the time and Heaton [lo years old] went aiong to keep me ~ o m p a n y . ~
