C N l L WAR TIMES 1861 - 1865
he year 1861was one of the most distresimg years America had ever seen since becoming an independent nation. Five states seceded fiom the union in January--Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida. Texas seceded in February followed by ~ o k h a r o l i n iTennessee, Arkansas, Virginia &d part o1f ~ Missouri. As the rumble of war grew, the ~ o n ~ ~ x ~ r e s s raced th'e reports to the West. On the evening of April4, 1861, a day that salY -_ :.- IL- : I r - x * :.n rony -n- ran, naii, ana snow raii in n - LaKe ury, rne u - - ~ roarea inro me aair _ city with ominous news about the fking by the south on Fort Sumpter. It was the powder keg that touched off the war. In the late 1850fs,a method of cornrnunication cailed the Pony Express was established. This introduced epochai changes to the reading habits of Utah's people, pushing out during the war in the n.. " arares inro new n ontiers. This plan brought the news to the isolated towns in parts of Utah and also brought the news, which helped expand the newspapier, Deseret Nws, so that it could keep the people of Utah informed.
