ADOBE HOME 1853 t has been twelve months this day since 1first carne down to this place with eleven wagons for to comrnence a settlement. It was then a wild desert, but is now a fiuitful field. The work that has :en accomplished at this place for the last year is a miracle--by a nall number of men, not many more than thirty. We now nurnber ,out sixty. Comrnemorated the day by having a 'ball' in the evening id some splendid speeches were given on this occasion. Good order wailed and we enjoyed ourselves very much." The preceding entry as written in Henry Lunt's journal on November 11, 1852. A few days before, on Novernber 8, a group of settlers left Cedar ity and headed south to search for a good location for cattle ranches. he party consisted of George A. Smith, Elisha H. Groves, John D. ee, William Leaney, Tarlton Lewis and several others. They 'turned the following day at which time George A. Smith counseled hn D. Lee and a few others to erect a fort on a creek (Ash Creek) )me 22 miles southwest of Cedar City. The new settlement was to :cded Hannony. Srnith also suggested that about ten families settle id build a fort on the creek 12 miles south of Cedar which would be Jled Kanarra. In addition, he felt that two more-families should join nirts and Harnilton on Shirts's Creek and "fort up" in a compact anner.
