Outside reading will be selected from the following: Gaskell, "Cranford';" Kingsley, "Hypatia ;" Jane Austin, "Pride and Prejudice;" Blackmore, "Lorma Doone ;" Bulwer Lytton, "The Last Days of Pompeii;" George Eliot, "Adam Bede ;" Dickens, "David Copeprfield."
Text : "Manual of Composition and Rhetoric," by Gardiner, Kittredge, and Arnold ; and Long's "English Literature."

English d. This course continues the work in the forms of discourse, special attention being given to exposition and argument. In this connection careful study will be given selections from the following list: Washington's "Farewell Address," Webster's Bunkerhill Oration," Burke's "Conciliation," and the "Hayne and Webster Debate." Besides weekly themes, a long exposition, a long argument, and an occasional address are required as a test of the students, ability to apply the principles of composition. Oral composition and debating are continued in this year. In connection with the history of American literature, typical selections from Cooper, Irving, Bryant, Longfellow, Whittier, Lowell, Holmes, Emerson, Hawthorne, Aldrich, Whitman, Howells, Mark Twain and minor authors are read and studied. A great deal of outside reading is necessary.
