32 SOUTHERN BRANCH
GERMAN
MR. DU PONCET
German 1. ELEMENTARY COURSE. The object of the first year's work is to familiarize the student with German construction so far as to enable him to read easy German text without difficulty. Emphasis is laid on correct pronunciation as indispensable in acquiring a good understanding of spoken German and a real appreciation of the the literary language. Conversational exercises, dictation, talks on German life, etc., are interspersed as the occasion permits. The principles of the relationship between English and German are explained and made the foundation for a systematic acquisition of vocabulary. The grammar and composition work is equivalent to that comprised in Part 1 of Thomas's Practical German Grammar. A number of easy texts are read and short poems memorized.
Prerequisite: English a or Latin 1.
Four hours per week throughout the year.
German 2. Most of the time is devoted to German prose and
drama. Some outside composition work is required.
Frequent sight reading, with comments in German, dictation
exercises and conversation.

German 3. This may be given if there are applicants.
SPANISH
MR. DU PONCET.
It is expected that a course in Spanish will be arranged for young people who may wish to fit themselves for the consular service as clerks.
For those who wish to become teachers in our Spanish possessions such a course will be very valuable,
