10 SOUTHERN BRANCH
In addition to this general society the students of the Normal have a "Debating Club," and a "Literary and Domestic Art Society." The former is conducted exclusively by men, the latter by women.
The Athletic Association is active not only in promoting games and out of door sports, but it is also taking an interest in other phases of physical education.
The student body of the Branch Normal is self-governing. An organization known as the "Branch' Normal School City" has been effected, its functions being similar to those of cities of the first class. Through this government the students make their own laws and enforce them. By thus affording a very practical training in civics, the system does much in preparing the students for the greater duties imposed by citizenship.
To further the musical interests of the school, especially in the way of chorus and glee singing, a society known as "The Choral" has been organized. All students of the Normal are eligible to membership.
In addition to "The Choral," the Ladies' Chorus, the Gentlemen's Quartet Club, and the Mandolin and Guitar Club have become permanent features of our music department. Students possessing the desired qualifications may apply to the instructor in music for membership in these clubs.
The President and Faculty of the University will co-operate with the instructors of the Branch Normal School in giving a course of public lectures during the winter months.
These lectures will be on various scientific, literary, and philosophical subjects of popular interest, the aim being to give the citizens generally some of the educational advantages of the Normal School. Lectures illustrated with stereopticon views will be given frequently.
