16 SOUTHERN BRANCH.
Elementary Zoology: This is a thoroughly practical course for teachers, and little. attention is given to those subjects which the teacher cannot use in common school work. Burnett's Zoology is used.
3 hours per week, first half-year.
Elementary Botany.-The design of this course is to offer teachers the instruction necessary to enable them to make practical use of botany in their daily school work, and acquaint them with the flora of the Great Basin..
3 hours per week, second half-year.
Elementary Physics.-Recitations and laboratory work. The recitations are accompanied by numerous lecture-table experiments which fully illustrate the subject-matter of the lessons. Three hours per week are devoted by each student to laboratory work which is quantitative in character.
4 hours per week throughout the year.
Geology.-Formerly announced as Geology 1. The course is devoted to a study of elementary General Geology, comprising a simple treatment of important topics in dynamical, structural, and historical geology. Excursions for the study of geological occurrences in the field are taken during the autumn and spring months.
2 hours per week throughout the year.
Bookkeeping.-This course is a practical and fairly complete treatment of the subject of bookkeeping. Much drill is given in writing business forms.
3 hours per week, either half-year.
Manual Training.-This course is designed especially for those students who expect to teach in the common schools. It will include constructive work relating to the subjects of the school curriculum as well as the mechanical principles of construction, involving the use of many materials and tools and methods of manufacture.
4 hours per week throughout the year.
Drawing.-The aim of this course is to teach the elementary principles of drawing and coloring to prepare students for the expression work which may be required of them in various other branches of study. Primarily it is Sought to cultivate the aesthetic instinct and develop the powers of observation. The course consists of design; drawing and painting from objects and models; life drawing, and open-air sketching with colored crayons, water color, pencil, and pen and ink.
The cost of materials for the course need not exceed $1.50 for one year.
4 recitations per week throughout the year.
