English b. This course consists of a careful study of the fundamental rhetorical principled - unity, coherence, emphasis, proportion - as applied to the whole composition, the paragraph, the sentence. Thruout the course frequent short and occasional long themes are required. The literature studied in class will be taken from the following Merchant of Venice, De Coverly Papers, Vicar of Wakefield, Silas Marner, Ancient Mariner. That done outside of class will be selected from this list: Churchill's "The Crisis;" Mulock, "John Halifax;" Cooper, "Last of the Mohicans," "The Spy;" Thompson, Wild Animals I Have Known ; Treasure Island.
