14 SOUTHERN BRANCH.
In addition to this general society, the students of the Normal have a "Debating Club," and a "Literary and Domestic Art Society." The former is conducted exclusively by men, and the latter by women.
The Athletic Association is active not only in promoting games and out of-door sports, but it is also taking an interest in other phases of physical education.
To further the musical interests of the school an organization known as the "Orphean Club" has been effected. This society comprises "The Choral," (an organization devoted to chorus singing) the gentleman's quartet club, the ladies' chorus, the mandolin and guitar club, the orchestra and the band.
CITY GOVERNMENT.
The student body of the Branch Normal is self-governing. An organization known as the "Branch Normal School City" has been effected, its functions being similar to those of cities of the first class.
Professor Milton Bennion, now of the University of Utah, was the founder of the Self Governing School System of the Branch Normal School.
Through this government the students make their own laws and enfore them. By thus affording a very practical training in civics, the system does much in preparing students for the greater duties imposed by citizenship.
The city government has been in operation since it was organized in 1898. It has proved satisfactory beyond the expectations of its founders. The student body has shown itself worthy of the trust reposed in it by the instructors and the students themselves are pleased with the condition to such an extent that wherever they go they take steps to procure like privileges.
