13 STATE NORMAL SCHOOL.
The necessity of ethical instruction is recognized and regular chapel exercises are conducted each week by the teachers and students. While theological creeds can not be taught in these meetings, the necessity of honesty, virtue, temperance, and upright attitude in all walks of life is inculcated and emphasized as the fundamentals to success in life. Besides the ethical training received, the students have numerous opportunities in these exercises for developing power in public speaking and reciting.
All students are invited to become members of the "Students' Society." This organization aims at the promotion of general culture in literature, public speaking, and parliamentary procedure.
In addition to this general society, the students of the Normal have a "Debating Club," and a "Literary and Domestic Art Society. The former is conducted exclusively by men, and the latter by women.
The Athletic Association is active not only in promoting games and out-of-door sports, but it is also taking an interest in other phases of physical education.
To further the musical interests of the school an organization known as the "Orphean Club" has been effected. This society comprises "The Choral," (an organization devoted to chorus singing) the gentleman's quartet club, the ladies' chorus, the mandolin and guitar club, the orchestra and the band.
The student body of the Branch Normal is self-governing, An organization known as the "Branch Normal School City" has been effected, its functions being similar to those of cities of the first class.
