out on the new lounge and looked at my pine tree." (A huge tree in the front of the lot.) September3rd: John and Jack went to the range again, to meet the surveyors and got back late. In September the children were back in school, Orpha was having surgery, and John was holding meetings concerning the beginnings of Ideal National Life Insurance, about which "all were very enthusiastic." In October and November, John Jr. was thinking about, and beginning the schedule of interviews, physical, etc., to get ready for his mission. September 6th: John Jr. and Jerry Odekirk were building range fence. September 7th: John took wire to Coalville for the fence and Orpha stayed home to rest. Because of the events mentioned above, Coalville gets left out of the diary entries until late November. We will assume the fencing project on the range was finished and the livestock was moved to winter feeding area. November22nd: Orpha left for Coalville at noon and cleaned the cabin for a meeting of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. 'The DUP women brought elegant food and sewed about 35 buffet style. The husbands seemed to enjoy it thoroughly. Everyone seemed to enjoy the cabin, although it was cold. We had a hard time keeping comfortable, although we had the fire going all afternoon." John and Orpha stayed overnight to get ready for the events of the next day. November 23rd: The missionary group came at 7 p.m. A meeting was held first and John was the speaker. After the meeting, they again served 35 at a buffet dinner. Everything worked out nicely, with the help of women guests. 'We arrived home in Salt Lake about midnight after two heavy days of entertaining. Several came both nights." November 27th: The family had planned to go to Coalville for Thanksgiving, but Orpha had a cold with a "beastly" sore throat, and they gave up the idea. November 28th: "All the Boydens - plus Thomases and Sweetens - came here" (to the home on Uintah Circle for Thanksgiving). Ann Marie was in the band so they went to the U of U football game. The dinner turned out well, with many contributing their favorite dishes. "John Jr.'s last Thanksgiving with us for some time. Too complicated to go to Coalville."
