Gary Johnson and Ed Spencer to help with the hay. "Trying like mad to get hay up before leaving on our eastern trip." July 1st: John and Steve went to Coalville to work in the hay again. July 2nd: "Boys returned home at midnight after long, hard round of hay hauling. They took Ed Spencer, Steve Wright, Art Nelson and Dick Noyes to help, and they wound it up." July 4th: The entire family left in their new station wagon to spend a month together on the vacation trip in the East. "Stopped in Coalville for a few matters." August 5th: after the trip: "Mom (Sweeten) went to Coalville as cook for Steve and Jack." August 6tl1: John Jr. and Paul went to Coalville to work with Steve and Jack. August 9th: Orpha went to Coalville in "Gramp's new Buick to pick up Paul and Jack. August 16th: Apparently it is time to harvest the second crop of hay. The family is at Coalville this week working in the hay. August 2 n d : "John and Steve struck out for Salt Lake - John to air patrol (This is John, Jr.j and Steve to football practice." The evening before. Orpha had a note concerning John Sr.: "John is so pleased to putter around - everything looks good here, so nice and cool after the heat of the city." August 23rd: still at Coalville: "We worked like dogs cleaning inside and out, then left for Salt Lake - to bed at midnight." Saturday, August 24th: The Middletons and Griffins were joining the Boydens for dinner at the cabin in Coalville (in honor of the forthcoming marriage of Dick Middleton and Jane Griffin). They had purchased new couches from Harry Nelson. Everyone "pitched in" to help get things ready, and the guests arrived at 6 p.m. "Dinner turned out well and they seemed to enjoy and appreciate it. We wound up the evening telling old time stories, much to the amusement of the younger set. After the guests left we tore into the dishes and got home (in Salt Lake) at midnight. A successful affair!" August 31st: John spent the day with his brother Everett in Coalville roofing. The day seemed "like old times." Sunday and Monday, September 1st and 2nd: The family went out to Coalville Sunday night to spend Labor Day there. Monday, John took Paul and David (Cromptonj with him to the range and "they had a big time." Orpha and Carmen "loafed and enjoyed it." Actually, Orpha says they "got
